Why ScanTailor should be used for scanned books via /r/pdf

Why ScanTailor should be used for scanned books

There are two problem with automating splitting scanned books in a single pass:

  • Automation is not always accuracy
  • Making a scanned book comfortably read is more than just splitting pages

For everything related with scanned books, I highly recommend using ScanTailor. It has features such as:

  • turn skewed pages vertically,
  • select content to reduce the page size,
  • add more margin to have more space for notetaking,
  • whiten the result for better reading experience.

You must export the PDF into images to use this, and recombine the output images back. The processed images may be very small in file size (up to only 6% of the origin), but excellent in quality.

To complete the task satisfactorily, I recommend you to use PDF-Xchange Viewer for extracting images and adding OCR, i2pdf for merging the outputs. In my experience, you can set the JPG quality to the lowest and it doesn’t seem much different, but you have a trade-off between the final output’s size and image quality. All programs are free. The whole process takes around 1 hour in background, with occasional checks.

From its GitHub:

Scan Tailor is Free Software (which is more than just freeware). It’s written in C++ with Qt and released under the General Public License version 3. We develop both Windows and GNU/Linux versions.

(This post is initially an answer of this question on Super User: How can I split in half a double-page scanned PDF in a single pass?)

Need to find a PDF report creator app for iOS/Android via /r/pdf

Need to find a PDF report creator app for iOS/Android

I need to find an app that my guys can use to create PDF reports from photos on their phones that can then be saved or emailed as needed. The only requirements are that they can label/comment the pictures, that they can use pics from their phones, and that the end result is a PDF. I have been using PDF photos for my iOS users and Report&Run for my android users but those were trial versions, which I did not realize. I do not mind paying for them, I am just trying to see if there is a free app out there that does this before I lay down the bucks.

Resizing pdf via /r/pdf

Resizing pdf

Hello everyone, I’d like to ask for some advice on my issue…

I just downloaded an illustrated encyclopedia, but each part is from 90 000 ko up to 330 000 ko.

Even the lighest files takes ages to load even a page, and if i scroll down to the next page and go back, the first page has to reload once again. I currently use microsoft edge. To give you an idea, the 90 000ko = 50 pages.

Do you guys know any website/software I could use to make the file lighter so I can open it without these issues? (of course I know the images will be compressed but the usual pdf format has high quality images).

thanks in advance!

Is there a macro for putting fields in standard locations on a PDF? via /r/pdf

Is there a macro for putting fields in standard locations on a PDF?

Maybe a basic question, but at work, a PDF is generated, that has a consistent look and feel, but the number of pages can vary.

In the document “header”, I need to place six blocks, and have them repeat on every page. Currently I open it in Adobe Pro, and add the fields, and then tell it to duplicate on each page.

This works, but I am hoping there is a macro that I can run that would help do this repetitive task.

Obviously the best place would be during the PDF creation process, but we have no control over that. We just get the PDF, and that won’t be changing.

Any ideas? Even external macro tools that could be run might work, but open to anything.

I can provide an example if needed.

New job updating PDF reports via /r/pdf

New job updating PDF reports

Hello, I have some potential work helping out a friend updating weekly PDF reports that consist mostly of text and a few stylistic/layout graphic elements. I will be getting the new information (text, data to input for graphs etc) every month and just have update the reports information and edit a few words in graphic boxes. I am running Mac OS on Macbook Pro, have the entire Adobe CS6 Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat Pro, Photoshop etc) as well as Iwork suite with pages, numbers, keynote). Wondering what is the easiest way to streamline this work. Extensive Photoshop experience, some illustrator, looking to get pointed in the right direction. Thanks! Subscribed
